Life Satisfaction Index and Correlated Variables Among Psychiatric Patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study was aimed to examine the relationship between Life Satisfaction Index-Well-being (LSI-W) and related variables among psychiatric inpatients hospitalized in various psychiatric institution in Korea. In order to achieve these set goals, subjects were gathered¢¥ through three stage random clustered stratified sampling method, and questionnaires were finally¢¥ applied to a total 208 psychiatric inpatients including 130 men and 78 women.
The collected data_ were processed by IBM PC AT computer, using SPSS program. Statistical methods employed were x2 test and principal component factor analysis.
1. The mean LSI-W score for the total subjects was 9.97 3.02
2. A principal component factor analysis of the LSI-W with a varimax rotation extracted two factors, which were two four-item sub-scales, ie, acceptance-contentment and achievement-fulfilment. But new, uncorrelated variable for measurement of¢¥ LSI-W to Korean psychiatric patients.
Therefore the authers suggest that it will be valid to adapt all items of LSI-W to Korean psychiatric patients.
3. In analysis of the degree of life satisfaction according to occupational status, subjects with semi-skilled job (73.3 %) or jobless (53.8%) showed low rate of life satisfaction among all subjects.
4. Regarding to the type of personality, subjects with masochistic or schizotypal personality showed low rate of life satisfaction. Patients with dramatic cluster including antisocial, narcissistic histrionic and borderline personality also showed the lowest score of life satisfaction..
5. The patients who experienced the moderate severity of their frustration feelings., attributed their frustration_ feelings to their environmental events and wanted to get their immediate gratification in terms-of illegitimate way, had the lowest score of life satisfaction.
